Starts/ Ends

Lalibela/ Lalibela

On our full day hike from and back to Lalibela you will, amongst other things, experience a superb view over our lovely mountains area, called the LASTA MOUNTAINS.

On the way you will visit ASHETEN MARYAM, a still active mountain monastery with a cave church... AND this track also offers you the great opportunity having an authentic insight in the Ethiopian farmer’s life.

We start early in the morning- in case your hotel doesn't provide breakfast you will meet your trekking guide at 7am in a local Cafe where you will have a nice, solid beginning of the day.

30-45 minutes later you start your hike directly from there.

After 2 minutes you will find yourself already out of town, right above Lalibela, in the nature.

On the way to the mountain monastery you will overcome hills in a zick-zack line- the paths have been there for lots and lots years and are the evidence that many feet already ran up and down that paths in order to bring goodies either to the Saturday market in Lalibela or back home, in the mountains.

This way is the only connection with the mountaineers and 'the rest of the world'

The views are already overwhelming and will make you - apart from the constant going up-up-up- stop many times.

You will see fields and tiny farmer’s villages, a lot of curious kids and the odd person trying to sell you little handmade dolls and Coca Cola, tea or coffee.

It's up to you if you like to visit and enter the monastery (there is an entrance fee) you can also go around it, the view will still be perfect.

In one of the little villages we will pause with you for the famous Ethiopian Coffee ceremony, which has 3 rounds- so it will take a little bit of time

Also if you ask for it, the lady of the house will be happy to show you the way they live, you can ask questions and your guide will explain all for you.

If you are lucky the farmer’s wife can show you how to bake injera-our beloved Ethiopian bread- this depends if she has to prepare it anyway-the fermentation needs 3-4 days.

Around mid- day you will reach the plateau called MEREBARBU (HUDAD), it is situated at 3450m.

Here your lunch will be served, you will feel like dining on top of the world.

After lunch and some time to relax you will slowly hike back to Lalibela, with hopefully nice memories of the beautiful countryside around Lalibela and the rural Ethiopian farmer’s life!

You also can choose to ride on the back of a mule or horse to the monastery.
