The famous city of legendary Queen Sheba is one of the oldest always inhabited areas of Africa and served an important role during the Aksumite kingdom.
 

As one of the holiest cities of Ethiopia, Axum is home to the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion-the place where the ark of covenant is believed to be kept.
 

A major tourists attraction are of course also the steles of Axum.
These obelisks are around 1,700 years old.
